Specifications

Barts is produced over a 40 nm technology, like the Radeon HD 5000 series. The 40 nm technology was used the first time in Radeon HD 4770, back in April 2009.

AMD had the possibility to use the latest 32 nm technology for the Radeon HD 6000 series, but because of high costs, the cheaper 40 nm technology was chosen over the 32 nm technology. As it appears in material from AMD, three 40 nm chips can be bought for the price of two 32 nm chips. A market survey has shown, that AMD’s target group prefers high performing hardware at a low price, which was the reason for the decision.

The Radeon HD 6000 series goes under the codename Northern Islands, and should be replaced by Southern Islands in year 2011.

On the paper, the Barts looks weaker than the Cypress. Both chips are based on AMD’s TeraScale 2 Unified Processing architecture. Barts is equipped with 14 SIMD engines, where each of those possesses four texture units and 16 stream processors. Every stream processor is made of 5 stream cores/shader processors. That results in 1120 shader processors and 56 texture units.

Cypress, is in comparison equipped with 20 SIMD engines, where each of those possesses four texture units and 16 stream processors. That results in 1600 shader processors and 80 texture units. The number of raster processors (32 ROPs) is the same in both chips, like the memory which is connected to the GPU through a 256-bit interface. Lowest on the diagram are four 64-bit memory controllers illustrated.  

 

 

Under the cooler of the VTX3D’s Radeon HD 6850 X-Edition, we find exactly the same 40 nm Barts processor, which makes the core in the bigger Radeon HD 6870. Few adjustments has been made, which together makes the Radeon HD 6850: 2 SIMD engines out of 14 are deactivated, and by that, a reduce of shader processors and texture units equal to respectively 160 and 8 units. More so, the frequencies of the core and the memory are lowered from respectively 900 and 1050 MHz to 775 and 1000 MHz (4000 MHz GDDR5 effectively). The calculation power is an amazing 1.5 TFLOPS. This number means, that the card can calculate 1.5 tera floating point calculations per second.


VTX3D have overclocked the Barts core from 775 MHz to 800 MHz. The memory has been raised from 1000 MHz to 1050 MHz. The modifications are made through a BIOS update. With these adjustments, the VTX3D Radeon Hd 6850 X-Edition should be 3-4 % faster than the Radeon HD 6850.


The Barts core in Radeon HD 6870 has the codename Barts XT. The downgraded edition of the Barts core in the Radeon HD 6850 has the codename Barts Pro.

Features

Tessellation is an important element in graphics innovation.


The Barts is equipped with improved tessellation units, and a rethought software algorithm. These initiatives are to compete with NVIDIA’s Fermi architecture, and related polymorph units. 

 

 

Microsoft DirectX 11 deals with various technologies, among them is tessellation..

 

 

Every tessellation unit is harnessed by a 100 %, by working with 16 pixels at a time, instead of working with 1 pixel. According to AMD, we will not experience a worse picture quality, but the tessellation performance will work faster. 


 

AMD have improved their anisotropic filtering algorithm, and by that we will experince an angle independency, and a renewed and smoother transition between textures. 

 

 

Since the launch of the first card in the Radeon HD 5000 series back in September 2009, AMD have developed 11 models in the Evergreen family. The models stretch from the low performing Radeon HD 5450, based on the Cedar PRO, to the powerful Radeon HD 5970, based on the Hemlock XT.

AMD will in the fourth quarter launch three new cards in the Northern Islands family. The cards are: Radeon HD 6950 – 6970 and 6990.



 

Radeon HD 6950 – 6970 are based on the upcomming ”Cayman”-chip. Cayman is more powerful and physically bigger, compared to the Barts. We will have to expect, that these single-GPU based cards will perform the same as, or better than, a Radeon HD 5870.


The Radeon HD 6990 is equipped with two “Antilles” chips, and will replace Radeon HD 5970. 

 

Radeon HD 5750 – 5770 will move to the new Radeon HD 6000 series, and will most likely be renamed soon. The diagram compares the different cards’ performance to each other. We can see, that Radeon HD 6970 is in between a Radeon 5870 – 5970 performance wise (closest to a Radeon HD 5970). Radeon HD 6990 will most likely take the place as the most powerful graphics card in the world, if NVIDIA does not surprise us with upcoming launches.
