The test: The first thing you meet when the Icy Box Media player is connected is the main page with shortcuts to Movies, Music and Pictures as well as settings. Everything looks clear and there’s no need to read the manual to find what you need. First up is the video function. In cooperation with the remote control you’ve got almost all the functions you’d have with a DVD player. It’s possible to add subtitles to .avi files if the subtitles title matches the video files title. Other than that there’s not much else to say, it works as supposed.
Next up is the picture function. This allows you to view your pictures on the screen, which is pretty much everything this does. However it’s not possible to “zap” between pictures, because the picture change takes a few seconds.
Last but not least is the music function. As with the video function, it’s possible to listen to the music you’ve put on the harddrive. To change between songs you use the remote control.
Besides the mentioned functions, there’s a menu for settings as well. In there it’s possible to set the player to FullHD 1080i resolution, change the language, change the background and a lot of other stuff.
Because the ICY BOX IB-3218StU-B media player is supposed to replace the DVD player, I’ve chosen to test the power consumption. The power consumption of the harddrive means a lot of course, but none the less the harddrives consumption isn’t that big. As you can tell from the below graph, the consumption is very low, which is definitely a good thing.
Note: power consumption has been measured in watts
Conclusion: When I first heard of the Icy Box media player I thought ”Wow, I have to get that”. The reason for that is because I often watch DVD movies, and these take up a lot of space. With a media player like Icy Box I’d be able to put a lot of movies in that instead, thereby removing the problem of finding the discs every time. This however also has a minor downside, because you need to “drag” the player back and forth between pc and TV if you often transfer movies, pictures or music, and this gets annoying in the long run. The overall quality is very good, and the design is nice and simple. Only downside is that the lid can be hard to get off. Overall the ICY BOX IB-3218StU-B media player is a complete product without any big downsides.
At the moment it’s priced at 838, - including shipping, which in my eyes is about 100-150 DKK too much. On the other hand, it does have a few useful functions compared to a standard external box, which somewhat makes the price acceptable.
- Supports 1080i HD resolution - Nice design - Easy to use - Low power consumption and low noise
- The price - Difficult to remove the lid when replacing the HDD - Discount remote
