The Sony DRU-700A we are evaluating today is one of the first DL drives in the market. Such a pioneering drive from Sony would at least not be ... erm ... affordable? Or so I suspected. Surprisingly, you can have the deal for the price of an 8X DVD writer a month ago. At under S$300, DL drives are set to turn SL ones into history. Expect a furious price plunge on older DVD writer models.
With the DRU-700A, Sony is brining Dual Layer recording to the masses. It does, however, have a few wrinkles that ought to be ironed out soon, including the inability to work with Verbatim 8X DVD+R media at the specified speed of 8X. Sony has not been too supportive about letting users flash their own drive's firmware, and they are not too keen on making new firmware versions publicly available, either. In addition, the lack of availability of dual layer media (possibility expensive as well) will somewhat turn off buyers at this point of time
