The new Cooler Master Cross Flow Fan is indeed quite a unique idea especially when you're using it with one of the more innovative casings, which is Cooler Master's CM Stacker. Sadly, the Cross Flow Fan is built as an accessory for the CM Stacker and is not meant to be used with any other casings. This is due to the way the fan works and how it's installed into the casing. However, for the more adventurous modder, there are probably numerous ways to install this fan. The only thing that one needs to consider before embarking on such a project is the design of the casing and whether there are enough clearance to accomodate this fan.
Installing the fan into the CM Stacker is relatively easy and like most high-end fan units, the Cross Flow Fan also comes with its own speed controller. The fan speed can be controlled via a four-way switch which is built into a PCI bracket. The problem with this arrangement is the inconvenience involved when one needs to change the speed of the fan. Fortunately, the fan wasn't at all noisy and it could be used at full speed without driving you insane. The specifications state that the noise level at full fan speed is 38dB. In our opinion, that's pretty silent since a quiet home's noise level is already at about 40dB.
Power users would probably also enjoy the fact that the fan unit could be easily disassembled for cleaning purposes. We don't really mean that the fan would trap dust, but it's an inevitable problem after much prolonged usage. Well, most of us don't clean our rooms much, so that accentuates the problem.
Overall, the Cross Flow Fan is a nice addition to the CM Stacker. For the power user or overclocker, adding a fan unit specifically for the motherboard (and its components) is definitely a good idea. At the time of publication, we have not received any pricing indication of this product. However, judging from the product, we're pretty confident it would come in handy to CM Stacker users and definitely something overclockers should consider. In our opinion, the product is good enough to carry 4-stars.
