Intel began shutting down one of its computer-chip factories in Chandler after the final wafer rolled off the line at 2:05 a.m. last Wednesday. Now comes the hard part: Moving more than 800 Chandler employees into out-of-town training assignments for the year during which the plant, known as Fab 12, will be undergoing a $2 billion upgrade.
Intel has built other $2 billion plants, but this is the first time it is remodeling one with the newest technology and finding other work for this many employees for this long a time. Construction officially starts today.
