The positive aspects of the ASUS drive were its low CPU usage, a fast CD-RW write speed, silent operation, excellent CD DAE performance and of course the record setting 8x DVD+R write time; the fastest write time for 8x DVD+R media to be clocked in our lab to date. At the point of writing, there's simply no contest as to who's the fastest kid on the block when it comes to writing 8x DVD+R media. It's really a no brainer which drive you should get for now if you write solely 8x DVD+R media and want a quiet drive while writing at the highest speed.
On the flipside, if the DRW-0804P hasn't been a letdown in our CD and DVD media seek time tests and added to the fact the slow write time across the board for DVD media (except our 8x DVD+R media), we would have awarded the ASUS drive a perfect score. But these detrimental factors have caused a performance impact too severe to be overlooked. After all, these few points are the bedrock of DVD-Writers and are major consideration points for people looking to get their hands on DVD-Writers. At the end of the day, our final description of this S$299 product is simple. The ASUS DRW-0804P is a decent DVD-Writer weighed down by slow seek time and an overall sluggish DVD write time with the only perceivable strong points to be its exceptionally fast 8x DVD+R write time and commendable sound insulation that could muster at most a 4 star award from us.
