If you are considering between Digital SLR and prosumer digicam with fixed lens, the latter is more suitable for those who do not wish to invest in too many accessories in future. Digital SLR is also more bulky and there is no vari-angle LCD preview for you to compose your shots at difficult angle. With a prosumer digicam like PowerShot Pro1, you can have a resolution higher than many Digital SLR with addition of macro mode and movie capture that Digital SLR do not have.
On the other hand, even Pro1 has higher resolution that Digital SLR, the noise level is still very much higher than DSLR. When viewing at 100%, only ISO 50 & 100 doesn't show any noise. The image is noisy at ISO 200 and 400, but the effect will be less visible if you shrink the image or uses noise-removal program. Furthermore, higher resolution only allows you to print your image at bigger size or crop out a smaller area for enlargement, you will need a larger memory card or hard disk to store your photo, faster CPU and bigger monitor to process your ultra-high resolution image and as there are more pixels packed in the small sensor, more noise will appear due to heat generated. Probably instead of just the MegaPixels race, the manufacturers should also improves in the noise level, speed, colour, dynamic range as well as battery life.
