I think it's fair to say that the Terratec Mystify 5900 Ultra noses the competition on balance over the tests. However, it's not a conclusive or dominating victory.
Street pricing is confirmed at £499.99. The Hercules 3D Prophet 9800 Pro, in the 128 MB guise reviewed here, comes in at over £100 less. As such, the extra performance of the Terratec Mystify 5900 Ultra is difficult to justify in such circumstances, especially if you factor in that this generation will likely by superseded by Christmas.
Worryingly for nVIDIA, and their OEM board manufacturers, the street price shows that they've thrown the entire kitchen sink at the card in terms of componentry. With the new ATi R400 core under development, I'm forced to wonder just how long ATi will take to overhaul the card and at what price point. Going back to our tennis match analogy in the introduction, nVIDIA have broken serve but not taken the set.
Final Score: 8.5/10
