Tom Hardy to play Sam Fisher in upcoming Splinter Cell movie

Ubisoft announced that Tom Hardy is attached to star as “Sam Fisher” in its forthcoming movie based on the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell video game universe, with Eric Singer attached to write the screenplay.

Hardy is a highly-versatile actor whose recent work includes the critically-acclaimed roles of iconic villain “Bane” in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and con man “Eames” in the Academy Award®-nominated INCEPTION.  He recently starred in LAWLESS, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, the boxing drama WARRIOR, and the thriller TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY.  He will next be seen in the lead role of MAD MAX: FURY ROAD.

Eric Warren Singer wrote the Black List script AMERICAN BULLSHIT, which David O. Russell will direct with Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner set to star. Singer’s previous credits include the thriller THE INTERNATIONAL.

“Tom Hardy is one of the biggest talents in the film industry, and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills. His involvement in the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell movie is exciting news for movie and video game fans alike,” said Jean-Julien Baronnet, chief executive officer, Ubisoft Motion Pictures. “In addition, Eric Singer is one of the most talented writers today.  We’re confident he’ll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story for the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell movie, while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans.”

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell is an award-winning stealth action video game series that has sold more than 23 million copies since its debut in 2002.  Splinter Cell follows protagonist Sam Fisher, a highly-trained special operative in a fictional black-ops sub-division, “Echelon”.  Sam Fisher and the agents of Echelon utilize combat skills, weapons and cutting-edge gadgets to neutralize international terrorist threats and rogue forces in modern, realistic stories ripped from the headlines.  Development for the next installment, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist, is being led by the Ubisoft Toronto studio, and the game is set for release in Spring 2013.

Ubisoft Motion Pictures was created in January 2011 to expand the audience of Ubisoft’s successful video game brands by bringing them to film, television and Web series. In addition to the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell movie, the studio is also partnering with New Regency on the upcoming movie based on the Assassin’s Creed franchise, and is in production on the Rabbids TV series, a collection of 78 seven-minute CGI episodes based on the insane stars of the video game franchise of the same name, in partnership with France Televisions and Nickelodeon.

The deals with Hardy and Singer mark another important step for Ubisoft Motion Pictures in its strategy of creating high-quality standalone movies that remain faithful to the video game franchises on which they’re based.

Hardy and Singer are represented by CAA.  Singer is also represented by attorney Mark A. Gochman at Stankevich-Gochman.
