The work we've done together has started to change the game in Washington -- and the politicians are terrified: In the wake of the Internet blackout that led to the dramatic death of two controversial online piracy bills, a new warning has entered the Hill vernacular: “Don’t get SOPA’d.”
There's still a lot of work in front of us -- and plenty of politicians and bills that we need to make damned sure do get SOPA'd:
- SOPA sponsor Lamar Smith wants to force ISPs to track and retain Internet users' data -- but we've been able to stymie him.
- John McCain's cybersecurity bill would give the military new powers to monitor the civilian Internet -- but in the last 3 days more than 60,000 Demand Progress members have fought back.
- The National Defense Authorization Act allows the military to detain Americans without charge or trial -- but we're helping keep the pressure on, in the halls of the Capitol and in the courts.
The fight never ends, but it's clear that our work together has had a tremendous impact.
